Quote by Uncle Moshe from the book Prisoner B-3087.
In the beginning of the story Yaneks town of Krakow is invaded by Nazis. The Nazis wall off a sector of Krakow and put all the Jews inside of it and they name it the Krakow ghetto. After the Nazis take all of Yaneks family he is finally taken to the Plaszow concentration camp. After that Yanek endures many more hardships including to death marches and nine more concentration camps. Two of these camps of Birkenau and Auschwitz are known as death camps. He is sent to the gas chamber in Birkenau waiting to die only to have water come out of the spouts. Later on in the book while he is at Dachau concentration camp he is saved by the Americans. While reading this novel I realized Yanek was younger than me when the Nazis invaded. When I realized this I thought if that means anything can happen to anyone no matter what age. I also realized how privileged I was to just have small things like a good meal and a toothbrush.
In some of the more detailed camps like his first camp Plaszow, Yanek meets a evil character Amon Goeth. Amon must shoot one Jew before he has breakfast, he is so horrible that the Jews keep a score of how many Jews he kills that day. Amon also has two horrible dogs which when he says the command will kill a Jew and rip them to shreds. Yanek also has to survive two death marches one of which he has to ask Moonface he worst enemy to give him bread. He also has to work in the famous Wieliczka Salt Mines. The farther the story progresses the harder it is for Yanek to remember who he is. Until they put him in a gas chamber only to shower them and he thinks I am alive and I am a human. The rest of the story those words keep popping up and this is what helps him keep the will to live and survive.
